Our major in-house tournament, the Memorial Pairs Trophy, this year saw ten pairs competing, with the teams divided into two groups of five and the top two of each playing in the final.
This year’s victorious pair were Beverley Laye & Colin Hood who beat Val Lambert & Mike McLachlan 8-0 to secure the trophy.
The scoreline, however, may look like a one sided affair, but that does not do justice to Val & Mike, who produced some fine bowls only to see them miss by a whisker.
Two pinpoint accurate woods from Colin in the opening end gave him and Bev a two-shot early advantage and set the tone. Then Bev struck early in the second with one next to the jack and despite some close efforts from Mike, it stayed and that was 3-0. Val & Mike kept battling away but it was just not their day in an entertaining final.
Before play began there was a minute’s silence to remember those members who have departed over the years. Sadly we noted the loss of fairly new member Steve Angus, who passed away just recently.
